Foreclosure Auctions

In recent years, the economic crisis that is affecting the entire world has left millions of people in the United States alone unemployed. Many Americans have found themselves in the difficult position of accumulating large debts while trying to make ends meet. Mortgage loans are the largest debts most people will have, which unfortunately also means mortgage payments are the most difficult debt to pay during economic downturns.

When a borrower takes out a mortgage loan to buy a house, the bank that lends them the money also takes partial ownership of the house, known as a lien. Since mortgages are such large loans, having a lien on the house gives banks leverage over the borrower in case the borrower does not make payments. This allows the bank to repossess the house and sell it at auction in the event that the borrower has missed several mortgage payments in a process known as foreclosure.

Banks are businesses, and they gain most of their profits from charging interest on loans. By foreclosing on a property, a bank is attempting to reclaim the money it lost by offering a loan and not receiving mortgage payments. To avoid dealing with the real estate market, banks resell foreclosed properties at auction. While this may be a quick way to reduce losses for a bank, the house's former owners may find themselves homeless.
