Central Florida to Receive $48M to Battle Foreclosure

by Administrator 10. September 2010 04:33
Central Florida will receive nearly $48 million in federal funds to assist foreclosure-plagued neighborhoods, officials announced Thursday.

According to officials with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the money is part of a $1 billion "neighborhood stabilization program." The Obama administration began the program to help local housing authorities across the county buy and renovate abandoned properties. The money will also be used to offer assistance with down payments and closing costs to low-and moderate-income homebuyers.

Florida, which has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country, will receive about $208 million, which is the largest amount of any state. California will receive the second-largest portion, $149 million.

"To us, it's an easy investment," said HUD Deputy Secretary Ron Sims. "It means someone will wake up and have a job to go to. … A community will have a new neighbor. And a new family will live here."

Foreclosures Can Make You Sick

by Administrator 3. September 2010 07:11

A report released Wednesday found that foreclosures not only have an economic impact, but may also cause medical problems for the people involved.

According to a survey released by the Alameda County Public Health Department and Causa Justa/Just Cause, people undergoing foreclosure experience higher levels of stress and increased medical problems. Tenants living in buildings in foreclosure have similar problems.

The new research builds on a previous study which showed that people living in the areas with the highest rates of foreclosures have life expectancies about 10 years less than in other parts of their counties.

The report "really highlights much of what we know about communities that are already overburdened by poor health outcomes," said Sandra Witt, deputy director of the Alameda County Public Health Department.
