A Maryland man accused of mortgage modification fraud wasordered to shut down his business’ website Thursday.

According to officials with the Federal Trade Commission,Howard Shmuckler has been indicted for charging homeowners for mortgagemodifications he never delivered. The FTC outlawed upfront fees for mortgage assistanceservices earlier this year in an effort to shut down an industry preying onstruggling homeowners.

Schmuckler’s website now redirects to a website called “TheyKilled The Savior.” The new website claims Shmuckler has been a savior of morethan 900 homeowners. “No, Howard Schmuckler cannot, does not, and never claimedto grant Eternal Salvation or save a Soul from Eternal Damnation,” the websitesays. “Did Howard Shmucker and The Shmuckler Group LLC save nearly a thousand(1,000) HONEST families from being out on the street – from being evicted fromtheir homes once they fell behind on their mortgage payments? YOU BET HE DID!”
