Maryland has been named one of the top states for mortgagefraud.
According to a new LexisNexis Mortgage Fraud Case Reportpublished this week, the state remains in the top-10 states for mortgage fraud.Maryland is at the number five position on the list. It was sixth in 2009.
According to officials with the LexisNexis Mortgage AssetResearch Institute, “material misrepresentation” by industry professionals, whichranges from falsified tax returns to bogus appraisals, dropped substantiallybetween 2009 and 2010. The authors of the report suggest that the decline doesnot indicate a drop in fraud, but that schemes are getting harder to detect.
The top five states for mortgage fraud are:
1. Florida
2. New York
3. California
4. New Jersey
5. Maryland
