Owner of Maryland Title Company Jailed for Mortgage Fraud

The owner of a Maryland-based title agency was sentenced tomore than six years in prison Friday for mortgage fraud.

According to court documents, 45 year-old Towson-residentAnthony V. Weis pleaded guilty to charges of mortgage fraud and was ordered toreport to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons on Friday. Weis was found guilty ofdefrauding lenders out of $3.9 million in eight months.

Weis, the president of Maple Leaf Title, was ordered to pay$4 million in restitution to 13 victims and their insurance companies.

Federal investigators said Weis’ scheme relied on stickinghomeowners with two mortgages and keeping their money in his title business.
