What is the principal in a mortgage?

In a mortgage loan, the principal is the amount of the original loan, which you pay off over time by making monthly payments. As you pay off the principal, the amount you owe decreases and the amount of equity in your house builds. That is, the amount of the house which you own outright increases. The principal must be paid off completely by the end of the mortgage loan term.

If you are having a difficult time making your monthly mortgage payments and would like to restructure your loan, contact the Maryland mortgage modification lawyers of Chaifetz & Coyle, P.C., by calling 443-546-4608.
